Wright County, Minnesota

Wright County, Minnesota, established in 1855, is located in the northwestern part of the Twin Cities Metro area.

Wright County is bordered:

  • on the north by Sherburne County and Stearns County,
  • on the west by Meeker County,
  • on the south by McLeod County and Carver County, and
  • on the east by Hennepin County.

Interstate Highway 94, U.S. Highway 55, and U.S. Highway 12, are the primary east-west transportation routes.

Minnesota Highways 24 and 25 are the primary north-south transportation routes.

Wright County was named after Silas Wright, Jr., who was Governor of the State of New York from 1845 to 1846, and a U.S. Senator for the State of New York from 1833 to 1844.

Wright County, Minnesota had a population of 124,700 as of the 2010 Census, an increase of 38.6% over the 2000 Census population of 89,986.

Wright County Primary Cities

Buffalo, founded in 1858, is the county seat for Wright County, Minnesota, and was named after the type of fish that were found in abundance in this region in its early days – which resembled carp.

The population of Buffalo in 2010 was 15,453.
