Sherburne County, Minnesota – originally covered with a forest of white oak trees – is located due north of the Twin Cities Metro area.

Sherburne County, established in 1856, is bordered:

  • on the north by Benton County and Mille Lacs County,
  • on the west by Stearns County and Wright County,
  • on the south by Wright County, and
  • on the east by Anoka County and Isanti County.

U.S. Highway 10 is the primary east-west transportation route.

U.S. Highway 10, U.S. Highway 169, and Minnesota State Highway 25, are the primary north-south transportation routes.

Sherburne County is named after Moses Sherburne, an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the Minnesota Territory.

In 1805 explorer Zebulon Pike passed through the area and gave the name of Elk River to one of the rivers flowing through the region by reason of the elk herds then roaming the prairie.
