Nicollet County, Minnesota
Nicollet County, Minnesota, established in 1853, is located in the south-central part of Minnesota.
Nicollet County is bordered:
- on the north by Sibley County and Renville County,
- on the west by Brown County,
- on the south by Blue Earth County and Brown County, and
- on the east by Le Sueur County.
Minnesota Highways 22, and 99, are the primary east-west transportation routes.
United States Highway 169, and Minnesota Highways 15, and 111, are the primary north-south transportation routes.
Nicollet County was named after Joseph Nicolas Nicollet – a French explorer who led three mapping expeditions in the upper Mississippi River basin during the 1830s.
Nicollet had been a mathematics professor and an astronomer in Paris, France, before the French Revolution of 1830.
Because of his background, Nicollet’s geography maps were more accurate than any others of his day.
Nicollet County Courthouse
The historic Nicollet County Courthouse, built in 1881 in a brick Romanesque Revival style, is located at 501 Minnesota Avenue, St. Peter Minnesota, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Nicollet County, Minnesota had a population of 32,727 as of the 2010 Census, an increase of 9.9% over the 2000 Census population of 29,771.
