Kanabec County, Minnesota

Kanabec County, Minnesota, established in 1858 out of Pine County, is located due north of the Twin Cities Metro area.

Kanabec County, is bordered:

  • on the north by Aitkin County,
  • on the west by Mille Lacs County,
  • on the south by Isanti County,and
  • on the east by Pine County.

Minnesota Highway 23 is the primary east-west transportation route.

Minnesota Highways 47, and 65, are the primary north-south transportation routes.

The name “Kanabec” was derived from the Ojibwe word “Ginebig”, which means “snake” – a reference to the Snake River which flows through the county.

Kanabec County Courthouse

The Kanabec County Courthouse – constructed in 1894 of brick and stone in the Romanesque Revival style – is located at 18 North Vine Street in Mora, just west of State Hwy. 65, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Kanabec County Population

Kanabec County, Minnesota had a population of 16,239, as of the 2010 Census, an increase of 8.3% over the 2000 Census population of 14,996.

Mora, incorporated in 1891, is the county seat for Kanabec County, Minnesota, and had a population of 3,571 as of the 2010 Census – many of whom are of Swedish descent.

Other cities in Kanabec County, Minnesota include Grasston, Ogilvie, and Quamba.
