Isanti County, Minnesota, established in 1857 out of Pine County, is located due north of the Twin Cities Metro area.
Isanti County is bordered:
- on the north by Kanabec County,
- on the west by Mille Lacs County and Sherburne County,
- on the south by Anoka County, and
- on the east by Chisago County.
Minnesota Highway 95 is the primary east-west transportation route.
Minnesota Highway 65, and Minnesota Highway 47, are the primary north-south transportation routes.
Isanti County was named after the “Izaty” band of Dakota Indians.
Isanti County Courthouse
The historical Isanti County Courthouse – constructed in 1887 of brick-façade in the Second Empire style – is located at 237 2nd Ave., SW in Cambridge, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
However, the current Isanti County Courthouse is located at 555 18th Avenue SW, Cambridge, MN 55008.
Isanti County Population
Isanti County, Minnesota had a population of 37,816, as of the 2010 Census, an increase of 20.9% over the 2000 Census population of 31,287.
Isanti County Primary Cities
Cambridge, established in 1866 on the Rum River, is the county seat for Isanti County Minnesota, and had a population of 8,111 as of the 2010 Census.
Many in Cambridge – reportedly over 5,000 people – are of Swedish descent, and it has been claimed that Cambridge has the highest percentage of Swedish-Americans of any city in the United States.
Other cities in Isanti County, Minnesota include Isanti, and Braham.
