Cass County was named after Lewis Cass – a 19th century military officer who served as Governor of the Michigan Territory, and as a U.S. Senator for the State of Michigan from 1845 to 1848.
Lewis Cass was the losing nominee of the Democratic Party for president in 1848.
Lewis Cass was controversial in part because he was an advocate of the Doctrine of Popular Sovereignty, which would have allowed voters in the U.S. territories to determine whether slavery would be legal in such territories, instead of leaving the matter to the United States Congress.
