Becker County, Minnesota
Becker County, Minnesota, established in 1858, is located in the northwest part of Minnesota.
Becker County is bordered:
- on the north by Clearwater County, Mahnomen County and Norman County,
- on the west by Clay County,
- on the south by Otter Tail County, and
- on the east by Hubbard County and Wadena County.
U.S. Highway 10, and Minnesota Highway 34, are the primary east-west transportation routes.
U.S. Highways 59, and 10, are the primary north-south transportation routes.
Becker County was named after Brigadier General George Loomis Becker.
Apparently, General Becker was one of three men elected to Congress when Minnesota became a state, but since Minnesota only had two Congressional seats, Becker was the odd man out, and arranged to have a county named after him instead.
Becker County Courthouse
The first courthouse was built in 1884.
The current Becker County Courthouse is located at 915 Lake Avenue, Detroit Lakes, MN 56501.
Becker County Population
Becker County, Minnesota had a population of 32,504 as of the 2010 Census, an increase of 8.3% over the 2000 Census population of 30,000.
Becker County, Minnesota Primary Cities
In 1877, the city of Detroit Lakes became the county seat for Becker County, Minnesota, with the Northern Pacific Railroad running through the city.
Detroit Lakes was founded by Col. George Johnston in 1871.
Other cities in Becker County, Minnesota include Audubon, Callaway, Frazee, Lake Park, Ogema and Wolf Lake.
