Washington County, Minnesota, established in 1849 as one of the nine original counties of the Minnesota Territory, is located in the eastern part of the Twin Cities Metro area.

Washington County is bordered:

  • on the north by Chisago County,
  • on the west by Anoka County, Dakota County, and Ramsey County
  • on the south by Dakota County,and
  • on the east by the St. Croix River, and the State Wisconsin.

Washington County is named after the first president of the United States – George Washington.

Washington County Courthouses

The original Washington County Courthouse in Stillwater built in 1870 in Italianate style, is an architectural masterpiece listed on the National Register of Historic Places – which should not be missed if you are ever in the area.

The original Washington County Courthouse is the oldest surviving courthouse building in Minnesota, but is now operated as an event center, and not a courthouse.

The current Washington County Courthouse is located just west of the city of Stillwater, north of Highway 36, at 14949 62nd Street North, Stillwater, MN 55082.

Washington County Population

Washington County, Minnesota had a population of 238,136 as of the 2010 Census, an increase of 18.4% over the 2000 Census population of 201,130.

Washington County Primary Cities

The city of Stillwater – founded in 1846, but incorporated in 1854 – is the county seat for Washington County Minnesota, and had a population of 18,225 as of the 2010 Census.

Other notable cities in Washington County, Minnesota include Lilydale, Afton, Bay Port, Cottage Grove, Dellwood, Forest Lake, Hugo, Lake Elmo, Mahtomedi, Marine on St. Croix, Newport, Oak Park Heights, Oakdale, Scandia, St. Paul Park and Woodbury.
