Todd County, Minnesota

Todd County, Minnesota – originally covered with white pine forests – is located due north of the Twin Cities Metro area, near the geographical center of Minnesota.

Todd County, established in 1856 out of Benton County, is bordered:

  • on the north by Crow Wing County and Wadena County,
  • on the west by Douglas County and Otter Tail County,
  • on the south by Stearns County, and
  • on the east by Morrison County.

Minnesota Highway 27 is the primary east-west transportation route.

U.S. Highway 71 is the primary north-south transportation route.

Todd County was named after John Blair Smith Todd – a general in the union army during the American Civil War – and for a time, the commander of the Minnesota National Guard base at Fort Ripley.

He was a first cousin to President Lincoln’s wife – Mary Todd.

Todd County Courthouse

The current and historical Todd County Courthouse is located in Long Prairie, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Todd County Population

Todd County, Minnesota had a population of 24,895 according to the 2010 Census, an increase of 1.9% over the 2000 Census population of 24,426.

Todd County Primary Cities

Long Prairie, the site of a federal Indian Agency office in 1845, is the county seat for Todd County Minnesota, and had a population of 3,458 as of the 2010 Census.

Its population in 1849 was approximately 3,000 – including many Native Americans who had been resettled to the area.

Other cities in Todd County, Minnesota include Grey Eagle, Staples, and West Union.
