Le Sueur County, Minnesota

Le Sueur County, Minnesota, founded in 1853, is located just southwest of the Twin Cities Metro area, in the south central part of Minnesota.

Le Sueur County is bordered:

  • on the north by Scott County,
  • on the west by Sibley County and Nicollet County,
  • on the south by Waseca County and Blue Earth County, and
  • on the east by Rice County.

Minnesota Highways 99, and 112, are the primary east-west transportation routes.

Pierre Charles Le Sueur

Le Sueur County was named after Pierre Charles Le Sueur, a French explorer and fur trader who is believed to have been the first European to explore the region surrounding the Minnesota River.

Le Sueur arrived in Canada in the late 17th century, in the company of French Jesuits traveling to their mission at Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.

He arrived in Minnesota somewhere between 1695 and 1700.

Le Sueur was a successful fur trader, and was well received by the indigenous people – becoming fluent in several of their languages.

A few years later, Le Sueur return to France, where he died in 1704.

Le Sueur County Courthouses

The first Courthouse in Le Sueur County, Minnesota was built in the city of Le Sueur in 1896-97, with the name of the city being changed to Le Center in 1930.

In 1974-75, the courthouse was remodeled, and again upgraded in 1994-95.

The Le Sueur County Courthouse is an architectural masterpiece in the Richardsonian Romanesque style, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places – and should not be missed if you are ever in the area.

Le Sueur County Population

Le Sueur County, Minnesota had a population of 27,703 as of the 2010 Census, an increase of 9% over the 2000 Census population of 25,426.

Le Sueur County Primary Cities

The city of Le Center – a delightful place – is the county seat for Le Sueur County Minnesota.

The other primary city in Le Sueur County, Minnesota is New Prague – on the northern edge of the county.
